Senior Photos: High School Fashion Inspired
Capturing the Essence of Youthful Style
Senior photos mark a significant milestone in a student's life, encapsulating the essence of their high school experience. What better way to capture this pivotal moment than with fashion-inspired photography that reflects their personal style and the trends that have defined their high school years? Whether you're aiming for a chic urban look, a laid-back bohemian vibe, or classic elegance, incorporating elements of high school fashion into senior portraits can create dynamic, memorable images.
Embracing Current Trends
High school is often where students discover and hone their personal style. Incorporating current fashion trends into their senior photos allows these portraits to serve as a time capsule of their youth. Think about the popular trends in high school fashion—whether it's streetwear, vintage-inspired outfits, or minimalist chic. Encourage your senior to wear outfits that they feel represent their high school journey and the fashion influences they've embraced along the way.
Streetwear
Streetwear has become a dominant trend among high school students, characterized by casual yet stylish outfits that often include branded hoodies, sneakers, and distressed jeans. This style is perfect for urban settings like downtown Boise. Imagine your senior posing against graffiti murals or in bustling city plazas, wearing their favorite streetwear brands. The juxtaposition of casual attire with the vibrant cityscape can create striking images that emphasize their youthful energy and confidence.
Vintage-Inspired Fashion
For those who adore retro aesthetics, vintage-inspired fashion is a fantastic choice. Think of outfits that feature elements from different eras, such as '70s bohemian dresses, '80s high-waisted jeans, or '90s grunge flannels. Locations like the Boise Grove Plaza or the Boise River can serve as ideal backdrops for these timeless looks. Posing with nostalgic props or in nature settings can enhance the vintage feel of these photos, making them look like scenes from a classic film.
Minimalist Chic
Minimalism is all about simplicity and elegance, focusing on clean lines and neutral colors. This fashion style lends itself well to sophisticated senior portraits. Your senior might choose sleek dresses, tailored pants, or monochromatic outfits. Consider shooting in locations that offer modern architectural elements or serene natural surroundings. The Grove Plaza and Downtown Boise provide various settings that can complement minimalist attire, offering both contemporary and classic backgrounds.
Personal Style Statements
While trends are a great starting point, personal style is what ultimately makes senior photos unique. Encouraging your senior to express their individuality will result in portraits that truly represent them. So think about what are favorite outfits, colors, and accessories that you feel most confident in. Incorporate these elements into the photoshoot to highlight your personality.
Sports + Activity Portraits
Are you looking to add some creative concepts and ideas to your photo gallery? I would love to work with you and see what we can create together! Maybe its photographing a game your playing in or doing some creative lighting and or effects showcasing you and the sport(s) that you love. As a dancer, you seek to preserve the elegance and dedication of your craft, allowing you to look back in future years on the effort and beauty of engaging in an activity that you cherish. Maybe you love being out in nature and have a passion for fishing and you want some images of you and the mother nature that surrounds you. Feel free to share your ideas so we can see what we can come up with.
Accessorizing
Accessories can play a crucial role in enhancing the fashion-inspired look of senior photos. Think about hats, scarves, jewelry, and shoes that can add flair to their outfit. If they play a sport, musical instrument, or have a hobby that involves specific gear, consider including these as props. These items not only accessorize their outfit but also tell a story about their interests and achievements during high school. Cars, pets, cap/gown, and/or including some memorabilia of the college you're attending are just a few other ideas you can incorporate into your sessions.
Posing and Composition
Posing ideas can greatly influence the overall feel of the senior photos. For instance, a confident stance with hands in pockets or a casual lean against a wall can reinforce the streetwear vibe. Twirling in a flowy dress or sitting by the riverbank can accentuate the bohemian aesthetic. Classic seated poses or walking shots can complement minimalist outfits. Working with the photographer to find poses that feel natural and expressive will ensure the portraits are both stylish and authentic. But don't worry I'm hear to help you along the way.
Location and Setting
The setting of the photoshoot should align with the fashion-inspired theme. Boise offers diverse locations that can cater to various styles. The Grove Plaza is perfect for urban and streetwear themes, while the Boise River can provide a serene backdrop for bohemian and vintage-inspired looks. Downtown Boise offers modern architecture and vibrant street scenes ideal for minimalist chic portraits. 8th Street and Hyde Park have such a charming, slightly eclectic vibe that would pair beautifully with your Vogue/GQ-inspired style—lots of great textures and character. The mix of old brick buildings, street art, and the natural light there can really make your portraits pop.
Camels Back Park and Kathryn Albertson Park are perfect examples for those more relaxed, organic moments. The wide-open spaces, plus the greenery and beautiful views, give a timeless, serene quality to a portrait session. I'm also open to other location ideas including studio options.
Urban and Street Scenes
Urban settings are fantastic for streetwear and contemporary fashion styles. Downtown Boise's murals, alleys, and plazas provide dynamic backgrounds that enhance the edgy and casual vibe of streetwear. Capturing candid moments amidst the hustle and bustle of the city can result in lively and engaging portraits.
Nature and Nostalgia
For a more relaxed and nostalgic feel, natural settings like the Boise River or local parks can be ideal. These environments complement bohemian and vintage-inspired outfits, offering soft, natural light and scenic backgrounds. Incorporating elements of nature into the photos can evoke a sense of timelessness and tranquility.
Modern Elegance
Minimalist chic outfits shine in clean, modern settings. The Grove Plaza's contemporary design or Downtown Boise's sleek architecture can provide the perfect backdrop for elegant and sophisticated portraits. These settings highlight the simplicity and refinement of minimalist fashion, creating images that are both stylish and classy.
Conclusion
Fashion-inspired senior photos are a wonderful way to celebrate the end of high school while showcasing personal style and current trends. By embracing various fashion themes and tailoring the shoot to the individual preferences of the senior, photographers can create portraits that are both unique and timeless. Whether the look is streetwear cool, vintage chic, or minimalist elegance, selecting the right outfits, poses, and settings will result in stunning images that capture the essence of youth and the beauty of self-expression.
I'm looking forward to what we can create together.
FAQ
When should I schedule my senior photo session?
The summer after your junior year is when senior picture season officially starts. So ideally, it's best to schedule your senior photo session at least 2-3 months in advance from when you want to have them done. This allows you to choose the perfect date and time that suits your schedule and ensures that you have enough time to plan and prepare for the shoot. You also want to make sure everything can be delivered back to you in time for sending out graduation invites, etc. See my blog for more on this topic.
What is my style... for Portraits?
Combining your style and personality! I love creating fun, fashion/editorial-inspired images, but those wanting a more natural style of images are also totally welcome. It's more about talking to see what you’re wanting and then going from there combining our ideas together. We can get pretty creative or keep it more casual!
Can I bring props to my photo session?
Absolutely! Props can add a personal touch to your photos and help tell your story. Popular props include sports equipment, musical instruments, books, or anything else that represents your interests and hobbies.
How should I prepare for my photo session?
Get plenty of rest the night before and stay hydrated and you might even wish to bring something to drink with you. Make sure your outfits are ready and wrinkle-free and plan for any props and accessories you want to bring. Put these items where you will easily remember them! If you’re wearing heels, you may also want to bring something more comfortable to walk in as well. Bringing a brush/comb, hair products, and even some makeup for touch-ups isn’t a bad idea either.
Can I bring a friend or family member to my session?
Of course! Bringing a friend or family member can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed. They can also assist with outfit changes and help with any props you bring.
What if I feel awkward when posing for photos?
We have all been there, unless you’re a professional model! My goal is to work with you so that not only do you look amazing, but to allow you to still be you. I will help pose you but often it’s more like directing. Seeing what you do naturally and then going from there. Often a "posed" image can look more natural than you might think just with a little directing.
Can I extend the session on the day of?
If time permits as well as me being available, then yes. Additional portrait session time is $50.00 per half hour rounded up and due at the end of the session.
